Best Roofing Materials: A Complete Guide

August 23, 20223 min read

When planning on roofing your house, whether for a roof replacement or a new installation, it is important for you to know the types of roofing materials that are out there and their specific uses. Chances are high that with this knowledge, you will be able to make the best decision for your needs.

Below are some of the common possibilities for your roofing needs.

1. ROLLED ROOFING

Rolled roofing materials are common. In fact, it is one of the most common options used in low-slope residential roofing. This material is also commonly used for outdoor buildings like sheds and shops and other utility-related structures. Rolled roofing is made of long rolls of minerals-impregnated or asphalt-impregnated materials topped with mineral granules.

Each of the rolls of this roofing material is about 3 feet wide and 100 square feet. Rolled roofing is an inexpensive choice for people in need of a fast and convenient option to cover their sloped-roof building.

2. BUILT-UP ROOFING (BUR)

Built-Up Roofing is one of the easiest options for flat roofs and low-pitch roofs. BUR systems are made using repeat layers of roofing felt impregnated with asphalt. The asphalt is applied when hot. The felt is applied so that it causes an overlapping layer, preventing water percolation and leaks. In some cases, the felt may be applied as much as four layers thick and a final layer of finely crushed stone mixed in hot tar may be applied over the top to make it more durable and overall impregnable.

3. MEMBRANE ROOFING

This is also a great option for flat roofs and low-pitch roofs. Membrane roofs are available in a number of options including:

  • EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer)

  • Neoprene (polychloroprene)

  • PVC (Polyvinyl chloride)

  • Polymer-modified bitumen

  • Chlorinated polyethylene and chlorosulfonated polyethylene sheets.

4. ASPHALT COMPOSITE SHINGLES

These roofing materials are fabricated from a fiberglass-based material that has been topped with mineral and asphalt granules. They are referred to as three-tab shingles and are a recommended choice for all home roofing needs. One of the biggest advantages of this roofing material is that it always comes with a warranty of about 20 to 30 years and also makes for an easy job when replacing damaged shingles.

5. STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING

Standing seam metal roofing is one of the most common metal roofs in use. This roof is named for the steel or aluminum roofing panels designed to interlock. The interlock is essentially to keep moisture from penetrating through the roof.

Metal roofs are more common in areas that are susceptible to snow or areas that are commonly affected by wildfires. This is because the roofing material is fireproof. Metal roofs also have a generally longer lifespan, although installation requires some very specific set of skills.

6. METAL SHINGLES OR SHAKES

This is a great option for homeowners, especially those who do not prefer standing seam metal roofs. The metal shingles and shakes allow users to enjoy the advantages offered by metal roofs. Metal shingles or shakes can be purchased in either aluminum or steel variants depending on the specific needs of the property owner. These roofing materials are produced from stamped metal that has been finished with high-quality baked-on coating or mineral granules. One of the most common reasons why they are the desired choice is because they can be produced to look like the traditional asphalt shingles, wood shakes, clay tiles or slate.

7. WOOD SHINGLES OR SHAKES

For people who find wood roofs attractive but can’t quite afford the expenses, you might consider choosing wood shingles or shakes. One of the biggest advantages of this material is its long-lived property. However, this roofing material is not always a good choice, especially in areas prone to wildfires and moisture.
